Tutoring Practices:

Tutors assist students in clarifying, organizing, and formatting writing assignments.

However, tutors do not compose, type, or mark students鈥� assignments.

Tutors review students鈥� writing to help identify sentence error patterns and provide students with information on how to correct the errors themselves.

However, tutors do not edit or 鈥渇ix鈥� students鈥� papers.

Tutors encourage students to return for a follow up review session.

However, students are allowed two 30 minute essay review sessions per day.

Tutors can review students鈥� writing and discuss strengths and areas for improvement.

However, tutors do not assess assignments for students by predicting grades.

Directed Learning Activities

Below, you will find a list of our current DLA鈥檚 which are learning activities designed by the Tutoring Center. Each DLA offers video instruction, a handout, or access to an outside resource designed to help you build a specific skill and will involve you meeting with a tutor in the Tutoring Center to check for completion and mastery.

Why complete a DLA?

A DLA can help you learn to sharpen your writing skills without having to worry about receiving a final grade since they are credit/no credit.
Some professors may require or offer extra credit if you bring proof that you visited the Tutoring Center and a DLA may count for that.
Some professors require DLAs for their class.

How do I do a DLA?

Download the handouts under the DLA.
Work on and complete the assignment on your own.
Come into the Tutoring Center to meet with a tutor to check over your work.
Please refer to the specific instructions under the DLA you wish to complete.

See the chart below for an idea of what DLAs would best suit your course needs.

After Completing the MLA and APA DLA form, except for the Tutor check section, bring in the PRINTED form and your MLA or APA paper (either in digital or physical format) to have it checked by an English Tutor. Your tutor will help you make the appropriate format changes and give you proof that you completed the DLA.

Setting Up an APA Paper

Setting Up an CMS (Chicago Style Manual) Paper

Print out: CMS DLA.
Download or print the CMS Notes and Bibliography 17th Edition Sample Paper or the CMS Author-Date 17th Edition Sample Paper.
After Competing the CMS DLA form, except for the Tutor check section, bring in the PRINTED form and your CMS paper (either in digital or physical format) to have it checked by an English Tutor. Your tutor will help you make the appropriate format changes and give you proof that you completed the DLA.

Comma Use

Print out Comma Use DLA.
Follow the directions on the Comma Use DLA handout and complete pages three and four (Comma Use Handout).
Bring in the completed form, except for the Tutor check section, to have it checked by an English Tutor. Your tutor will go over the Answer key with you, and give you proof that you completed the DLA.
