海角直播 Alumna Valerie Johnson Championing Higher Education Equity

As Legislative Affairs Manager for the Campaign for College Opportunity, 海角直播 Hills College alumna Valerie Johnson is leading statewide efforts to expand college access and advance equity in higher education.
鈥淢y time at 海角直播 laid the foundation for my academic and professional journey,鈥� Johnson said. 鈥淚t was here that I first developed the passion for higher education access and equity that has guided my career.鈥�
As a student, Johnson immersed herself in leadership and service through student government and the Honors Program.
鈥淭he support and opportunities I found at CHC inspired me to continue my education and to dedicate myself to advancing policies that ensure all students-- especially first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students-- have the opportunity to succeed,鈥� she said.
That passion carried Johnson from 海角直播 to state and national policymaking. Her career spans roles at the California Student Aid Commission, the California State Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the Foundation for California Community Colleges. Today, Johnson serves as Legislative Affairs Manager for the Campaign for College Opportunity. In this role, Johnson helped drive the passage of AB 1780, California鈥檚 landmark legislation banning legacy admissions at private universities such as Stanford and USC.
鈥淭his historic win ensures that admissions decisions are based on students鈥� talent and hard work, not family connections,鈥� Johnson said. 鈥淚t represents a critical step toward equity in higher education.鈥�
Beyond her policy work, Johnson remains engaged in community service. She recently served as Co-Chair of the California Forward Young Leaders Advisory Council, providing youth perspectives on major statewide issues. She also continues to mentor and collaborate with student organizations to strengthen advocacy across California.
鈥淭hrough these efforts, I strive to uplift communities, break down systemic barriers, and ensure all students can thrive,鈥� she said.
Johnson credits 海角直播 for sparking her lifelong commitment to education and equity.
鈥淚 am grateful to 海角直播, and to Dr. Ericka Paddock specifically, for shaping the foundation of my journey,鈥� Johnson said. 鈥淚鈥檓 proud to represent what CHC alumni can accomplish,鈥� she said.
