STEM Student Finds Inspiration for Genetic Engineering Career at National Research Conference
Publish Date: June 30, 2025

Recently, STEM student Jo-Ann L. had the incredible opportunity to attend and present at the Genetics Society of America鈥檚 (GSA) 66th Annual Drosophila Research Conference in San Diego, thanks to funding provided by the 海角直播 Foundation.
Reflecting on the experience, Jo-Ann shared:
*"During the trip, I attended a variety of talks on current research involving Drosophila flies, covering topics such as cell division, evolution, epigenetics, and toxicology. The conference also featured workshops tailored for undergraduates, providing valuable insights and learning experiences. Every day, there was a poster session, which was one of the most exciting parts for me. Engaging directly with researchers, hearing firsthand about their work and its impact, was both fascinating and inspiring. Seeing the breadth of research happening worldwide reinforced just how much there is to discover and build upon in the field of science. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals, all passionate about advancing research and expanding our knowledge, was truly exhilarating.
As an undergraduate, I鈥檒l admit that some of the terminology went over my head, but the researchers presenting their posters were incredibly welcoming and willing to explain even basic concepts. I never felt talked down to鈥攅veryone was approachable and supportive. Since most attendees were graduate students or postdoctoral researchers, it was also great to connect with other undergraduates who were experiencing the conference for the first time. Additionally, I participated in the conference鈥檚 mentor program, where I was paired with a doctor and had the chance for one-on-one discussions. This was an amazing opportunity to ask questions and learn about their journey in research.
Attending this conference has left me even more inspired to pursue research. I gained valuable insight into ongoing studies and how my chosen field, genetic engineering, is evolving. I can鈥檛 wait to see how research continues to expand and to follow the work of those I met at the conference.
A huge thank you to Krysten and the 海角直播 Foundation for making this experience possible! I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to grow in my educational journey."*
